Can I upgrade the brakes on my Project BMX?Updated 2 days ago

If you own a V1 Project BMX and want to upgrade the braking system, the options available depend on which version of the bike you have — Skyway or spoked wheels. Here’s what you need to know:

🔧 V1 Skyway Wheel Version

This version originally came with a C-brake system.

You can convert to a mechanical disc brake on the front wheel only.

✅ Mechanical Disc Brake Conversion (Front only)

To complete the conversion, you’ll need the following parts:

  • New front fork (V2 fork design)

  • Evolve CNC Skyway bracket with screws

  • Mechanical brake caliper with mount screws

  • Brake cable and sheathing

  • Disc rotor

Note: This is only compatible with the front wheel. The rear Skyway wheel will not clear a brake caliper without interference.

Hydro disc brakes are not suitable for V1 Skyway setups.

  • The front wheel can technically use a hydro setup with the new fork

  • The rear wheel cannot, as the hydraulic caliper contacts the Skyway Tuff wheel when turning

For that reason, we do not recommend attempting a hydro setup on V1 Skyway bikes.

🚲 V1 Spoked Wheel Version

Good news — this version is hydro-ready.

You can take your bike to any local bike shop to have hydraulic disc brakes installed.

We don’t currently sell hydro brakes or kits for this, but the spoked version is compatible with most standard brake systems.
